I've worked hard in my career, first as an employee and then later as a business owner. Almost always, without fail, someone on social media - or even in person - would refer to me as a 'boss babe' and it would feel like all that hard work had been diminished. Typically the someone was a female who thought they were empowering me with that language, when in fact (without realizing it) they were doing the opposite.
I think the term boss babe or boss lady (or insert any other ridiculous female noun here) implies that you're not taking someone seriously. First of all, it sounds juvenile. Secondly, it implies that you're not a REAL boss - you're a GIRL boss. And that's different?!
Feminism, as defined in the dictionary is the advocacy of women's rights on the basis of the equality of the sexes.
Equality. Like as in 'the same as.'
Equality is never achieved by segregation. Ever.
So any time you use language like boss babe, girl boss, etc. you're just segregating yourself into a separate category, which is not equal.
We're not empowering each other with that language so can we please just eliminate it from our vocabulary?
